Seeing the VALUE in physical activity

Updated: Apr 12, 2024

Many of us experience suffering in our lives because we are not connecting with our values - the things that truly matter to us.

We can use our values to guide us in our chosen life direction and to behave like the person that we want to be. The first step in doing this is to identify what our own values are. Values will be different for every person so when considering your own values be realistic about what values are important to you. It could take a while before you are able to identify your own core values that you want to live your life by.

So what’s this got to do with physical activity?

Well, you will notice that it is easier to be more active when you focus on connecting with your values. You can use your values to help you choose activity behaviours that bring about purpose.

For example, if one of your values is creativity you could look at activity options that allow you to express your creativity, such as dance.

If you have a value of generosity you may wish to participate in an activity where you can raise money for a charity close to your heart.

And if one of your values is independence you could focus on how you can include more activity into your day-to-day life to maintain your independence.

Remember that our values are unique to us. Take the time to reflect on your heart’s deepest desires to find 5-8 values that are important to you. This will allow you to take committed action towards leading a more active lifestyle.
